Turismo Criativo / Creative Tourism

Creative tourism is inserted in the 2nd generation experiences concept  and can be defined as a kind of tourism that offers visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through the participation in courses and learning experiences that are characteristic of the holiday destination.

That means that, when visiting a given site, tourists can learn to perform certain tasks, normally associated with the arts, entering thus in deep contact with the local community, sharing experiences and deepening their knowledge, in a proximity relationship that increases the ties between locals and tourists.

Creative tourism stimulates the cultural enrichment and has positive effects on the residents self-confidence, helping in the recovery of the destinations tangible and intangible heritage.

Its characteristics allow the diversification of tourist activities without the need of prior investment, generating a positive effect on the cultural infrastructures profitability, thanks to this new demand.

With this new approach, destinations can attract a new kind of tourists, in search of a high added value and with a bigger purchasing power.

There are already good examples of work in this area all over the world, and there is even an international network – Creative Tourism Network – that joins destinations, researchers, non-governmental organization and companies, in a network where everyone shares knowledge in this area.

Renowned world tourist destinations like Paris, Barcelona, Galicia, Brazil, Thailand or Austria already realized that the future of tourism follows this path and have already many creative tourism solutions available for tourists.

Autenticidade / Authenticity

In a daily life increasingly characterized by virtuality, stress, plasticity and relationships from a distance, the search for the authentic gains a greater expression every day.

The genuine nature of those who are not influenced by modern society’s pressures has nowadays an enchantment that conquers us at the first contact.

When looking for experiences of contact with ancient urban professions or rural world activities we find people with such a spiritual wealth that fully involve us in their simplicity, generosity and life story.

In each corner of their universe there is a story to tell, a thrill to share, a secret to reveal.

That's how they make sure they receive people, without filters and opening their heart, proud to show what they do, giving what they have and don’t have, to make us feel welcomed as part of their family.

Shepherds, craftsmen, tailors, fishermen ... all of them guardians of our collective memory, of our cultural roots and the true meaning of being a working people with personal values.

It is a balm for the soul the conviviality with this authenticity, that contact with our origins, which repositions us and awakens to what is truly important.

The development of the tourist experience concept has come to a second generation, where the person and its individual, cultural and social values are the reference, assuming the subject (tourist) the leading role.

In these experiences co-creation is encouraged, meeting, therefore, tourist’s deepest expectations and psychological needs.

In second generation experiences, the function that the experience has for the subject matters.

Its meaning, if he/she seeks auto-fulfillement, belonging or something different but equally profound in its values and individual references.

It’s this kind of experiences, with a key focus on the characteristics and intrinsic motivations of the individual, I have promoted in recent projects.

More than a provider-client relationship, what we look for is to fully satisfy the participant expectations, through a partnership relationship and team work, in order to achieve a unique, memorable and unrepeatable experience.

The term acculturation is used when referring to cultural modifications resulting from contacts between people of two different societies.

These contacts can be reflected in direct interactions caused by military conquest, colonization, emigration, missionary activities or even by the touristic phenomenon - which is the one that most interests me - or in indirect contacts through the various media.

Acculturation is a constant social phenomenon, which was, is, and will be a permanent reality.

Societies are not isolated boxes and they influence each other in various ways.

Acculturation seems to assume two main forms, having among them several intermediate degrees.

Acculturation for destruction, a pernicious form of acculturation often verifiable in war scenarios or colonization, occurs when a society can impose their culture to another society, and the culture of the first disappears or becomes residual.

Acculturation by assimilation, more frequent in tourism, is when a society is influenced by the culture of another society but does not put aside their own culture.

This influence is an enrichment, an enlargement of the cultural heritage.

It's a win-win relationship, the sharing of past experience, where everyone drinks a bit of the other’s culture, extending their knowledge and worldview.

I'm a supporter of developing creative experiences in tourism, contributing to acculturation for assimilation, to the extent that the organizers, in the destination, transmit their culture of genuine life, not arming it, but also receiving all the information and energy of whom interacts with them.

Aspetos fundamentais do turismo criativo / Fundamental aspects of creative tourism

Creative tourism changes the ways of producig and consuming touristic experience in this sector, ant it’s based on four fundamental aspects.

Firstly, the development of the creative potential of tourists, providing them with the basic tools to develop their creativity, encouraging them to take something more than a simple souvenir on their return home.

Equally important is the fact that tourists are involved actively in the creative process, thus being more likely to create genuine sharing and real connection with local people and culture.

Creativity is present everywhere, but it is essential that a connection between the creative process and the destination is established, anchored in the culture, creativity and local identity, which will turn each tourist experience in a unique and unrepeatable phenomenon.

The concept of creative tourism has also inherent to it co-creation and co-production, with tourists and locals, transforming the experience in a two way relationship, in which both sides are involved in the whole process, magnifying it with their past experience and knowledge.

This is an increasing trend in tourism demand, making the adaptation of those operating in the tourism market to this reality an absolute must.
