Escutar / Listening

Noise in companies is immense, given the strong competitiveness, the huge flow of information and the rapid pace of our times.

We are often approached by colleagues, who ask us if we heard them, to verify that the message went through.

We answer affirmatively, nodding and continuing with what we were doing.

Shortly thereafter, when confronted with this previous communication, we don't have the foggiest memory of its content.

We didn’t lie to our colleagues, we really heard them, the problem was that we weren't listening.

What I mean with this distinction of two apparent synonyms, is that the action of hearing is a physical action, while the action of listening is intellectual, insofar as we process the information heard when listening, retaining the information and taking it into account for future actions.

Also in marketing and sales, this skill of listening to our market, our customers, is crucial.

Much of the marketing and sales teams success comes from this sensitivity to listen carefully to its customers feed-back, the clues they leave that allow us to achieve a sale, the hints they give to adjust the product or service to their real needs, the opportunities they whisper.

The path is a lot easier when we have this listening skill well present within us, because we can outstand in an increasingly full of noise business world.

Modern sales people need to have a broader vision than the traditional in its function.

Their number one priority is to sell - I think we all agree with that – but selling what, to who and why?

Consumers today are better informed, with access to multiple platforms and suspicious of a more aggressive sales style.

It is normal to hear the expression "can I help you?" in stores, but it is necessary that all sales people have a real concern with the true meaning of this sentence, that genuinely bother to understand the customer's problem and strive to solve it.

Modern clients are seeking for a quick and effective response to a problem and are not easily tangled in an argumentation line that tries to force them to a limited range of products, no matter how skilled that argumentation is.

Sales people mission is, therefore, to understand exactly what the problem is and find a solution that fully satisfies customer’s needs, establishing a partnership and trust relationship along the process, which will ensure that the client will come again in the future.

To the great classic sales people natural skills, we have to join creativity, co-creation, versatility, active listening and networking, that will surely help achieving better results.
