Turismo Criativo / Creative Tourism

Creative tourism is inserted in the 2nd generation experiences concept  and can be defined as a kind of tourism that offers visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through the participation in courses and learning experiences that are characteristic of the holiday destination.

That means that, when visiting a given site, tourists can learn to perform certain tasks, normally associated with the arts, entering thus in deep contact with the local community, sharing experiences and deepening their knowledge, in a proximity relationship that increases the ties between locals and tourists.

Creative tourism stimulates the cultural enrichment and has positive effects on the residents self-confidence, helping in the recovery of the destinations tangible and intangible heritage.

Its characteristics allow the diversification of tourist activities without the need of prior investment, generating a positive effect on the cultural infrastructures profitability, thanks to this new demand.

With this new approach, destinations can attract a new kind of tourists, in search of a high added value and with a bigger purchasing power.

There are already good examples of work in this area all over the world, and there is even an international network – Creative Tourism Network – that joins destinations, researchers, non-governmental organization and companies, in a network where everyone shares knowledge in this area.

Renowned world tourist destinations like Paris, Barcelona, Galicia, Brazil, Thailand or Austria already realized that the future of tourism follows this path and have already many creative tourism solutions available for tourists.

One of the great fallacies of the business world is that only those who have a natural predisposition for innovation, true creative geniuses who have a God’s gift to make things work better, through flashes of enlightenment only at their reach, can innovate.

Creativity can obviously be more present, or be more fluid, in some minds, however, it can be worked or "helped".

Systemize creativity may seem paradoxical in the sense that it looks like we are cuffing a concept which encloses in itself particularities as spontaneity, disruptive thinking and the absence of rules.

There is however a current of thought that identifies some steps and tools that help in the innovation process, getting some features from the designers work and thinking routines, and applying it to the development of new solutions.

Design thinking is a new approach to innovation in the business world, seeking solutions closer to the source of the problems.

The innovation process is divided into phases, being the first the gathering of information that begins with empathy, i.e. with the understanding of how people experience the physical, cognitive and emotional world, how they work and how cultures and social groups interact with certain products or services.

It then passes to a phase of developing ideas, using a few simple mechanisms that help in the creation of prototypes, that will help you learn about the concepts as you interact with them.

In a final phase, we implement the ideas, making the value propositions tangible and involving people with them.

I recently attended a course that opened my horizons to this new reality of the business world and endowed me with some tools that I've had the opportunity to experience.

I am, today, a big fan of this approach to business development, I will always be ready to use these techniques in my future projects and I strongly advise you to take contact design thinking for your business.

Modern sales people need to have a broader vision than the traditional in its function.

Their number one priority is to sell - I think we all agree with that – but selling what, to who and why?

Consumers today are better informed, with access to multiple platforms and suspicious of a more aggressive sales style.

It is normal to hear the expression "can I help you?" in stores, but it is necessary that all sales people have a real concern with the true meaning of this sentence, that genuinely bother to understand the customer's problem and strive to solve it.

Modern clients are seeking for a quick and effective response to a problem and are not easily tangled in an argumentation line that tries to force them to a limited range of products, no matter how skilled that argumentation is.

Sales people mission is, therefore, to understand exactly what the problem is and find a solution that fully satisfies customer’s needs, establishing a partnership and trust relationship along the process, which will ensure that the client will come again in the future.

To the great classic sales people natural skills, we have to join creativity, co-creation, versatility, active listening and networking, that will surely help achieving better results.

Tourism, Creativity and Development / Tourism, Creativity and Development

Tourism, Creativity and Development is an excellent book written by Greg Ricards and Julie Wilson, that talks about the themes of creative tourism and sustainable development of tourist destinations around this theme.

I “drank” a lot of what's written here to develop creative experiences in projects in which I was involved, and that's why I think it's important to share this reference for those who want to deepen the knowledge in this area.

Innovative approaches to new needs, a different way to be in tourism, with more attention to people, to what they're looking for and what they have to offer.

I hope you find this suggested reading useful.

Share with me other readings that are a reference for you, because that way can learn from each other.

Despertar a criatividade / Awakening creativity

Creativity is an essential part to the innovation process in any industry.

If we understand innovation as a key factor for success in the business world, we can easily realize the true importance of this skill.

Its creativity that makes us stay ahead of our competition, that makes us different and aim to have higher chances of success.

What makes this skill so special is that you can't teach anyone to be creative, you can't learn it in books, you can’t transmit creativity.

We can, however, stimulate creativity with dynamics that put us face to face with unexpected scenarios that require creative responses, and thinking outside the box.

There are, for me, four exercises that stimulate creativity, the easy way.

1) Travel is a creativity enhancer exercise, an excellent stimulus because we are confronted with new scenarios, vast information and we have our mind open to the novelty and dreams.

2) I often pick an object and try to give it five different uses from those normally assigned to it, forcing me to have a more open vision and create surprising scenarios.

3) Writing a text on a given theme, with a minimum number of words, especially if it's about something that you are not familiar with, obliges you to structure ideas and go beyond, in search of information that helps you to achieve your goal.

4) Socializing is the largest informal creative action anyone can make, because, when you come to think of it, by socializing we are participating in a true informal brainstorming, where the ideas flow in a relaxed and fluid way.

This disruption with every day’s life that these simple exercises provide, helps us to awaken creativity and stimulate it, with clear implications for our productivity in the workplace.

More agile, creative minds, with quick thinking and focus on solutions, this is what we should look for in a motivated and productive work team.

This stimulus is one of the main goals of my work and that is why I force myself to exercise creativity every day.

Interpersonal skills are a critical element to keep your team motivated and with high yield.

With a good use of interpersonal skills we can increase employess  happiness and commitment and increase the organization’s productivity.

Timothy Butler, Director of Career Development Programs at Harvard Business School, and James Waldroop, a founder of Peregrine Partners consulting firm, identified 4 dimensions of relational work.

After analyzing psychometric tests of 7000 professionals, these two authors identified the following 4 dimensions:

1- Influence: people strong in this dimension like to influence others, being very good at negotiating and persuading, as well building networks.

2- Interpersonal Facilitation: the stronger elements of the team in this dimension are often behind the scenes, being good judges of people's emotions and motivations.

3-Relational Creativity: people strong in this dimension are masters at using images and words to create excitement, build relationships and motivate others to take action.

4-Team Leadership: team leaders are successful because of their interactions with others, working through others to achieve goals and are more interested in people and processes required to achieve them.

Many of us are strong in at least one of these dimensions, but we can also be strong in many of them, or none.

The relevance of knowing these dimensions, is to adapt the work to the strongest of each employee’s dimension, increasing the team’s productivity.
