Marketing experiencial / Experience marketing

One of modern marketing’s tendencies that I’m most passionate about is experiential marketing.

This type of marketing is based on actions marked by emotion and sensory or affective experiences, creating a very close connection between the customer and the brand, by the strong involvement implied.

Via real or virtual events, generators of a differentiating experience and a deep involvement in a given situation, the client is encouraged to get an emotional response, thus creating a powerful link with the proposed brand positioning.

Marked by the power of emotions, feelings, surprise, the contact with something that awakens the senses, experiential marketing actions have the effect of becoming life experiences that forever remain in the memory of those involved.

As important as the impact that causes directly in those who participate in them is their viral trend, i.e., for being widely shared in digital media, passing the brand message in the most powerful possible way, which is the digital activity of potential consumers - the closest thing we have from the word of mouth of the analog era, multiplied in its impact by several million.

In an era when all has already been read and heard on traditional brand communication, this way of making people feel them, through moments of creative, innovative and interactive marketing, is, for me, the most effective way to engage consumers with a brand, generating true passion and making them its ambassadors.

Experiential marketing is quite powerful, whether it is applied to products or services, and can be done with controlled investments, being its impact so big that, from the outset, its return is assured, when well designed and executed.

The key to its success is in understanding exactly what arouses consumers, what drives them to engage, and it's often the small things that sometimes we miss in the noise of the daily hustle and bustle.

Once upon a time, in a very, very near future, a digital world will exist, overpopulated by millions of informations, where only the best can survive.

Informations fight fiercely for their increasingly precious space and notoriety, and the ruler of this world, King Content, is called into action to keep a healthy environment and award the informations that deserve more prominence.

This could be a fairy tale, but the purest of realities is that the future is today and that content is, indeed, the king.

Information are charged in an overwhelming way, through all kind of communication channels, all the time and by the most varied possible ways.

Digital marketing and sales’ great challenge is, therefore, being able to get the message across, captivating the potential consumers and involving them in its communication.

This is only possible with a continued communication, where content is relevant, unique and original, arousing the audience’s interest and keeping their attention, in a connection that should be ambivalent, dynamic and lasting.

All of us can insert information on our business sites, social networks, blogs or newsletters, but it is of growing importance to do it consistently, with a sustainable strategy and resorting to professionals who master the techniques and platforms that best fit its implementation.

It has never been so important as today to be careful with contents and devote much time to its generation, dissemination and management, because the public is increasingly demanding, competition is becoming more and more sensitized and active and because the degree of specialization is becoming so strong, that we need to have in our organization someone who dedicates full-time to this function.

Words and expressions as copywriter, community manager, digital marketing manager and e-commerce sales manager are increasingly heard, because they are a latent need to present and future organizations.

Stories carry with them a mixture of information, dream and mystery that engage and passions us.

Since small children we like to hear stories and allow them to take us to other universes and times.

The fact is that we don’t forgotten stories, on the contrary, we live them and keep them in our imaginary for many years, sharing them with others.

For my professional life, storytelling has two practical applications.

In tourism, the art of telling a story that involves people with the place they are visiting, that transports them to other times, guiding them for new sensations, which make them have a truly unforgettable visitation experience, is fundamental.

All places have their stories and it is up to the tourism professionals to know how to discover them and tell them as they deserve, with passion, intensity and authenticity, so that tourists can take them as their big trip trophy.

In marketing and sales it is also an art to communicate a brand, a product or service, through a story, creating relationships with consumers, providing values and giving an identity that goes beyond a simple transaction.

If you are attentive, big international brands all have a story to tell, making their line of communication and their actions revolve around it, gaining uniqueness and differentiation.

The new digital and social media are, nowadays, platforms that help stories to be more dynamic and experienced in permanent information sharing, involving people in a unique way, which certainly brings benefits to the companies in their relationship with existing or potential customers.

For this reason, I am increasingly aware and looking to know more about storytelling techniques, because I'm sure I will use them often, in all my projects.

Social media are a privileged business communication channel, by the way they allow companies to measure its customer’s pulse, their community breathing.

Some people react negatively to the presence of companies in these platforms, and we need to respect this point of view, but there are also people who love to receive information and make choices via social media.

Despite the various filters that are already available to users, leaving a wide range of choices in their hands, it seems clear to me that, in the short term, social media will have to choose from one of two ways: remove the company’s possibility of communicating their services on these platforms, or strengthen the possibilities of interaction between companies and users.

For what we have seen so far, I am convinced that the second hypothesis gains greater consistency everyday.

With personal dynamics based more and more in the use of social networks, especially with the growing use of these platforms via smartphone, it is natural that users say thanks to the presence of stores in the media they use daily, facilitating quick access to their goods or services.

There are already thousands of online stores, being Facebook the platform where we can find more and better examples.

Direct selling in social media platforms allows a much more customized interaction with the user, an exact measurement and a more effective real-time response.

It also allows us to be more accurate on digital marketing operations, monetizing community management work more immediately and establishing a greater proximity relationship with the clients, because the store is always open and available to serve them wherever they are.

If the opportunities are huge, the challenges are, however, of the same dimension, because the competition is going to be even bigger and user’s demands will also increase accordingly.

It is truly exciting to watch the development potential of sales work in this area, and that's why I'm particularly attentive to this theme.

One of the intrinsic features of the human being is its natural competitive instinct and the pleasure we take from fun and games.

There are registers or signs of games existing in societies from prehistoric times and, if you think about it, it's games and play that make the first interaction between parents and infants, which reveals that our most basic senses are positively activated when we play.

It’s not a surprise, thus, that the electronic games industry is today one of the most profitable in the world, already surpassing the film industry, and having still a huge progression margin, according to what recent studies demonstrate.

The business world is obviously aware of this trend and therefore we find more and more examples of companies that, in their marketing and sales strategies, take the inclusion of gamification as a key success factor.

According to recent information, 70% of the companies from the Forbes Global 2000 list, plan to use gamification for marketing purposes and obtain customer loyalty.

Gamification, on its theoretical basis, is the transposition of game thinking and mechanics to engage participants in solving problems.

With this technique, we intend to have a stronger engagement of the companies customers or organisations paticipants, increasing in a fairly natural and intuitive way their relationship with the brand or with the project concerned.

The use of social networks and community management, increases the application of this type of techniques, for the easy with which one can obtain good results, based essentially on the participants own dynamics of use.

One must be aware, though, that it’s not enough making a leaderboard and give some tasks to have good results.

It takes a lot more than that, and there is no standard solution that can be pointed as flawless, varying from each particular context the best gamification solution to implement.

I have done some approaches to this way of interacting with communities, with good results, and I want to increasingly integrate more gamification into all projects that will develop in the future.

Gerar conteúdo ou entendê-lo? / Generate content or understanding it?

Many community managers have their primary objective focused on content generation to feed these communities.

This is, without a doubt, an important part of their mission, but even more important than the creation of content, for me, is to understand all content and interpret it correctly.

By this I mean that a community manager cannot be insensitive to the content generated by the users themselves.

We have to pay particular attention to what the elements of the community say and publish, so that we can measure the pulse of the community, understand the way it wants to follow, interact with it and not act for it, interpret the positive or negative signals that emerge from it and adapt the generation of content according it.

With this we can improve the results by virtue of a greater involvement of all elements, which can identify better with the shown content.

Well understanding the contents generated by users also allows us to respond more effectively to any complaints, to boost sales and customize relationships with the most active elements, thereby increasing the community dynamic.

The biggest danger for any virtual community is having an autistic manager, living apart from the life that the community must have and/or reacting contrarily to the path that is pointed by the users themselves.

The function requires knowledge of copywrite, but one must always have very present the public relations skills.
