Turismo vivencial / Life seeing tourism

An even newer concept than the previously approached creative tourism, in its infancy when it comes to its recognition, is “life seeing tourism”.

This type of tourism, framed, in the theoretical plan, on the 2nd generation experiences I already mentioned here, has a focus on specific areas of interest, usually not associated with tourism.

The interest in this kind of experiences is professional or personal, and offers an opportunity to interact with numerous different sectors professionals.

The various examples of interaction with these professionals can go to the point where the tourist can even share their family space realizing in person all the reflexes that the profession can have on the daily lives of these people.

Human beings have a natural curiosity for the backstage of the most different professions.

Even the seemingly dull jobs can be fascinating, if they are well presented.

We may be tempted to think that there is nothing more unattractive than commercial fishing or truck driving and, however, the success of television shows such as “Deadlist Catch” and “Ice Road Truckers” (Discovery and History channels) proves that the interest in these professions is massive.

People are curious to see how things are done and allowing them to look beyond the curtain changes the relationship that we have with them, getting them to have a better understanding and appreciation for the work of these professionals and thus relate more deeply with them.

It is a fascinating business area, still virgin, which gave me an immense pleasure to explore, where I learned a lot and that will be part of my options range for all projects in which I become involved in the future.

Marketing experiencial / Experience marketing

One of modern marketing’s tendencies that I’m most passionate about is experiential marketing.

This type of marketing is based on actions marked by emotion and sensory or affective experiences, creating a very close connection between the customer and the brand, by the strong involvement implied.

Via real or virtual events, generators of a differentiating experience and a deep involvement in a given situation, the client is encouraged to get an emotional response, thus creating a powerful link with the proposed brand positioning.

Marked by the power of emotions, feelings, surprise, the contact with something that awakens the senses, experiential marketing actions have the effect of becoming life experiences that forever remain in the memory of those involved.

As important as the impact that causes directly in those who participate in them is their viral trend, i.e., for being widely shared in digital media, passing the brand message in the most powerful possible way, which is the digital activity of potential consumers - the closest thing we have from the word of mouth of the analog era, multiplied in its impact by several million.

In an era when all has already been read and heard on traditional brand communication, this way of making people feel them, through moments of creative, innovative and interactive marketing, is, for me, the most effective way to engage consumers with a brand, generating true passion and making them its ambassadors.

Experiential marketing is quite powerful, whether it is applied to products or services, and can be done with controlled investments, being its impact so big that, from the outset, its return is assured, when well designed and executed.

The key to its success is in understanding exactly what arouses consumers, what drives them to engage, and it's often the small things that sometimes we miss in the noise of the daily hustle and bustle.

Turismo Criativo / Creative Tourism

Creative tourism is inserted in the 2nd generation experiences concept  and can be defined as a kind of tourism that offers visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through the participation in courses and learning experiences that are characteristic of the holiday destination.

That means that, when visiting a given site, tourists can learn to perform certain tasks, normally associated with the arts, entering thus in deep contact with the local community, sharing experiences and deepening their knowledge, in a proximity relationship that increases the ties between locals and tourists.

Creative tourism stimulates the cultural enrichment and has positive effects on the residents self-confidence, helping in the recovery of the destinations tangible and intangible heritage.

Its characteristics allow the diversification of tourist activities without the need of prior investment, generating a positive effect on the cultural infrastructures profitability, thanks to this new demand.

With this new approach, destinations can attract a new kind of tourists, in search of a high added value and with a bigger purchasing power.

There are already good examples of work in this area all over the world, and there is even an international network – Creative Tourism Network – that joins destinations, researchers, non-governmental organization and companies, in a network where everyone shares knowledge in this area.

Renowned world tourist destinations like Paris, Barcelona, Galicia, Brazil, Thailand or Austria already realized that the future of tourism follows this path and have already many creative tourism solutions available for tourists.

Autenticidade / Authenticity

In a daily life increasingly characterized by virtuality, stress, plasticity and relationships from a distance, the search for the authentic gains a greater expression every day.

The genuine nature of those who are not influenced by modern society’s pressures has nowadays an enchantment that conquers us at the first contact.

When looking for experiences of contact with ancient urban professions or rural world activities we find people with such a spiritual wealth that fully involve us in their simplicity, generosity and life story.

In each corner of their universe there is a story to tell, a thrill to share, a secret to reveal.

That's how they make sure they receive people, without filters and opening their heart, proud to show what they do, giving what they have and don’t have, to make us feel welcomed as part of their family.

Shepherds, craftsmen, tailors, fishermen ... all of them guardians of our collective memory, of our cultural roots and the true meaning of being a working people with personal values.

It is a balm for the soul the conviviality with this authenticity, that contact with our origins, which repositions us and awakens to what is truly important.

The development of the tourist experience concept has come to a second generation, where the person and its individual, cultural and social values are the reference, assuming the subject (tourist) the leading role.

In these experiences co-creation is encouraged, meeting, therefore, tourist’s deepest expectations and psychological needs.

In second generation experiences, the function that the experience has for the subject matters.

Its meaning, if he/she seeks auto-fulfillement, belonging or something different but equally profound in its values and individual references.

It’s this kind of experiences, with a key focus on the characteristics and intrinsic motivations of the individual, I have promoted in recent projects.

More than a provider-client relationship, what we look for is to fully satisfy the participant expectations, through a partnership relationship and team work, in order to achieve a unique, memorable and unrepeatable experience.

Imagine that you can dream about an experience and create it from scratch with someone that is going to help you to make it happen?

Everything is tailor made to fit you and you can follow all the details so that nothing is missing in this dream experience.

This is called co-creation and it's something in which I strongly believe.

In a universe where information is everywhere, sometimes it’s difficult to find exactly what we want and we can have some difficulty in putting all the pieces together to make things happen.

On the other hand, it is normal to see everything “packed” so that it can be sold massively, leaving us without the opportunity to intervene.

I believe on the exact opposite, in the experience that is only truly valid if the client also has the chance to participate in its creation.

When we let the customer participate in the creation, we bring new worlds and perspectives to the experience, which will surely lead us to the service enrichment, finding solutions that, probably, never would cross our mind.

Better yet, we have the guarantee that, by following this path travelled alongside with the customer, we are greatly increasing the chances of complete customer satisfaction, while establishing a proximity relationship that extends into the future.

This concept of co-creation is a value aggregator for both customers and suppliers, since all of them discover new approaches and, therefore, you can get a unique, unrepeatable and unforgettable final result.

Turismo experiencial / Experiential tourism

To move up in the value chain, in tourism, our focus should be on the experience, rather than the common approach in this industry.

Giving more importance to the aggregation of values to the spent time and lived experience, instead of focusing on infrastructures and services, is fundamental to attain certain niche markets, moving up the value chain and positioning ourselves not by the price, but rather by the theme of the experience, gaining relevance for tourists and differentiating from the competition.

Tourist destinations should therefore be seen as an interaction theater, participating in the production of the experience themes.

We can categorize experiences into four major groups: "sensory/physical", "emotional", "intellectual/spiritual" and "social", being the characteristics of an experience, briefly, as follows:

-The frame of reference is the person

-Structured in our existence

-Through a time process

-With a determined intensity and gradation

-An independent, emotional, whole
-With sense

-Requiring no commitment

-Complex and multidimensional

Tourist experiences currently available on the market have primarily focus on the sensory/physical and emotional groups, but this is a trend that is already changing, for what it's worth to be attentive to its development.

Tourism has grown so much, and has been massified in such a way, that is nowadays common to this sector being regarded as an industry.
The first images that come to our mind when we think about industries are assembly lines, similar products getting out on a treadmill, machinery and processes standardization.
My vision for what tourism should be points exactly towards the opposite direction, which is customization, the sharing of a lifetime experience that brings along personal proximity relationships, creating unique moments, which we will keep, gratefully, for the rest of our lives.
The key to second generation experiences is precisely there, in people, in the richness of their values and way of life, and in the genuine relationships that arise spontaneously, without script, pre-written speeches or a hidden agenda.
When sharing their space and personal values, those who receive tourists are truly giving themselves to those who visit them, without barriers or cosmetics, thus giving space to a personal connection that hardly gets lost in time because it will inevitably survive, at least in that particular place of our memory where we keep the good stuff.
A relationship of sharing and closeness, that is valid in both directions, is established, because all the participants are involved and always live this experience in a unique and real way, without artificiality.
That's why I think these experiences have huge added value and mark the difference, contributing to an increase of quality and meaning to tourism.

Fonte: Adaptado de “The experience economy” (Pine / Gilmore - 1998)

Pine and Gilmore identify the ascent in the value chain of a product or service taking into consideration three vectors: competitive position, price and consumer needs.

Source: adapted from "The experience economy (Pine Gilmore-1998)

Analyzing the chart designed by these authors, we can see that the trend is to climb up in the value chain as higher as we present an increasingly differentiated product and with relevance to the client, getting him to pay a higher price.

To better understand this chart I will use the coffee example.

In the lowest part of the value chain we have the coffee beans to transform, after its transformation into coffee-drink it becomes more relevant to the client and more differentiated between them.

They are then served in coffee shops that introduce their personal touch and there, in the provision of this service, one more step in the value chain is hit.

To get to the top you have to include something, introduce a consumer experience, as, for instance, is done by Starbucks, with its shops that are more than just a coffee shop where you will consume a drink, they constitute a consumer experience, having, therefore, a much higher degree of differentiation from the competition, establishing an emotional connection with your customers, making them pay more for the products and services consumed there.

That is why I try to bring to all my projects high value-added experiences, because they are made from people to people.

Unique, original, genuine and unrepeatable.

For many authors who study tourism, its product is not only physical, but is above all "an experience, sometimes hard to conceptualize" and cannot be defined simply as a service or as a commodity, but as "an experience".

This implies that "tourist choices become immense, as the number of possible experiences", which endows the sector of a vast range of opportunities for creating innovative experiences.

The tourist's own involvement in the development of innovations in the tourism market is crucial, since this plays an active role in the course of the consumer experience, in fact, it is the fundamental factor to this experience, "because without it, it doesn't exist".

Thuerefore, the customization of the tourism offer gets increasingly important, to the extent that tourists will have a tendency to refine their search, just considering the tourist experience as "good" when they get the total satisfaction of their expectations and needs.

Personalization, the adaptation of the offer to the customer's needs and expectations also helps to increase the differentiating role of that offer.

Its this differentiation that I seek, in everything I do in the tourism universe.
