Capitalizar as diferenças / Capitalize on differences

A team is made with people with different personal features.

It is common to find groups where there is one person who stands out for its good humor, another for being cranky, another for being inquisitive and other suspicious, for example.

In addition to the personal characteristics, there are also the technical characteristics, and so we can find in a workforce those who are better with numbers, who write better, who are tougher or more creative.

As in any relationship, also in a work team it is good that there are differences in technical and human characteristics, contributing to different approaches and visions, which necessarily have to enrich the final product.

It is the team leaders responsibility to use these differences to achieve a rich and consistent collective work, capitalizing on the each one’s contribution to a stronger and more competitive final product.

All elements will, therefore, leave their print, forming a more complete whole, solid and unique, more effective and more efficient.

Putting employees in creative contexts, where that differences capitalization becomes clear, will make it more easy to transpose this message to the companies everyday life and help managers to understand the best mechanics to make it work.

I have had many successful examples, with several working teams, where the advantages of using the differences as an engine of a dynamic, creative and competitive company, become evident, which makes me very happy, because I can feel immediately my contribution to the improvement of these organizations lives.

Fonte: Adaptado de “The experience economy” (Pine / Gilmore - 1998)

Pine and Gilmore identify the ascent in the value chain of a product or service taking into consideration three vectors: competitive position, price and consumer needs.

Source: adapted from "The experience economy (Pine Gilmore-1998)

Analyzing the chart designed by these authors, we can see that the trend is to climb up in the value chain as higher as we present an increasingly differentiated product and with relevance to the client, getting him to pay a higher price.

To better understand this chart I will use the coffee example.

In the lowest part of the value chain we have the coffee beans to transform, after its transformation into coffee-drink it becomes more relevant to the client and more differentiated between them.

They are then served in coffee shops that introduce their personal touch and there, in the provision of this service, one more step in the value chain is hit.

To get to the top you have to include something, introduce a consumer experience, as, for instance, is done by Starbucks, with its shops that are more than just a coffee shop where you will consume a drink, they constitute a consumer experience, having, therefore, a much higher degree of differentiation from the competition, establishing an emotional connection with your customers, making them pay more for the products and services consumed there.

That is why I try to bring to all my projects high value-added experiences, because they are made from people to people.

Unique, original, genuine and unrepeatable.

Empreendedorismo / Entrepreneurship

This is probably one of the most overused words in Portugal’s business context in recent years.

There is even a sort of entrepreneurial doctrine that encourages all young people to take the initiative to generate their own employment and create companies.

The question I put is: do all individuals have personal skills that qualify them to be entrepreneurs, in the sense of being creators of their own business?

In my point of view, the answer is no.

Can these competencies be worked?

Yes, they can.

As can be worked the same skills for the acts of entrepreneurship within the company: proactivity, commitment, a sense of initiative, creativity and innovative thinking, for example.

This is one of the forgotten factors in the current speech directed to younger generations.

Entrepreneur -ipsis verbis - means to intent, to implement, and does not necessarily imply starting a business of your own.

We can, and must, work employees’s skills, no matter how old they are, to encourage entrepreneurship within the organizations, so that they are top professionals and don’t accommodate to the status quo.

The nonconformity, the spirit of sacrifice and self-giving to a project, intrinsic characteristics to entrepreneurship, have to be present in the mind of all elements of the organization.

That's what transforms an employee into a super-employee and these entrepreneurs within the company are the ones that we must engage and encourage, to thrive in business.

I defend this perspective of internal entrepreneurship very passionately and launch this challenge permanently to those who work with me.

Transformar as dificuldades em oportunidades / Transforming difficulties into opportunities

When placed before difficulties, work teams have two possible paths: the negative - which implies resignation and discouragement - and the positive - looking at it as an opportunity for development.

My vision of business and life, leads me to choose the second path, because I believe it is the only way to achieve positive results.

That's why I pass this message every chance I get, and I try to help organizations developing behavioral mechanics take leads them to always see an opportunity in every challenge that appears.

The setbacks that we face along the way often bring a door opening for us, for example, to modify processes, increase the union, increase creativity, stimulate communication and sharing of information, discover new markets, redefine strategies or foster learning.

The approach I bring to the teams I work with, is precisely to open this perspective for who surrounds me, so they can realize that there is always an opportunity associated to each hurdle that appears ahead.

For me it's a matter of attitude, and I believe that attitudes can be worked, with the appropriate tools and language to each organizational profile.

In the same way that you see the actual fiber of a nation when it recovers from a major storm or a war, companies also have to pick up the best of their team in times of crisis, and from there get reinforced.

Gerar conteúdo ou entendê-lo? / Generate content or understanding it?

Many community managers have their primary objective focused on content generation to feed these communities.

This is, without a doubt, an important part of their mission, but even more important than the creation of content, for me, is to understand all content and interpret it correctly.

By this I mean that a community manager cannot be insensitive to the content generated by the users themselves.

We have to pay particular attention to what the elements of the community say and publish, so that we can measure the pulse of the community, understand the way it wants to follow, interact with it and not act for it, interpret the positive or negative signals that emerge from it and adapt the generation of content according it.

With this we can improve the results by virtue of a greater involvement of all elements, which can identify better with the shown content.

Well understanding the contents generated by users also allows us to respond more effectively to any complaints, to boost sales and customize relationships with the most active elements, thereby increasing the community dynamic.

The biggest danger for any virtual community is having an autistic manager, living apart from the life that the community must have and/or reacting contrarily to the path that is pointed by the users themselves.

The function requires knowledge of copywrite, but one must always have very present the public relations skills.

Tourism, Creativity and Development / Tourism, Creativity and Development

Tourism, Creativity and Development is an excellent book written by Greg Ricards and Julie Wilson, that talks about the themes of creative tourism and sustainable development of tourist destinations around this theme.

I “drank” a lot of what's written here to develop creative experiences in projects in which I was involved, and that's why I think it's important to share this reference for those who want to deepen the knowledge in this area.

Innovative approaches to new needs, a different way to be in tourism, with more attention to people, to what they're looking for and what they have to offer.

I hope you find this suggested reading useful.

Share with me other readings that are a reference for you, because that way can learn from each other.

Soft skills / Soft skills

Soft skills is a sociological term related to emotional intelligence, which identifies our behavioral skills.

They are our personal attributes, enhancers of our individual interactions, our productivity and career perspectives.

Strong work ethic, positive attitude, communication easiness, good time management, problem-solving ability, team spirit, self-confidence, ability to handle criticism and learn from it, flexibility, versatility and good results under pressure are some examples of soft skills that matter searching and developing in the company’s employees.

I like to develop actions focused on working these skills, because I know that we strengthen organizations by better preparing its human resources to face the competitive world of business.

It is essential to have the working team aware to the need of working their soft skills, so that they are more productive, generate a better work environment and become winners in all projects that they are involved in.

Over the years I have worked with many companies, smaller or larger size, with more or less available budget, from several activity sectors, having obtained each time a positive reflection of the developed behavioral training work.

These are the results that motivate me more and more to continue to contribute, the way I know how, for excellence in companies I work with.
